(((Local))) Community Projects
"Socially engaged art functions by attaching itself to subjects and problems that normally belong to other disciplines, moving them temporarily into a space of ambiguity. It is this temporary snatching away of subjects into the realm of art-making that brings new insights to a particular problem or condition and in turn makes it visible to other disciplines."
-Pablo Helgera, Education for Socially Engaged Art.
This project was created to connect and address specific needs of an artists own community - working from the inside out. Each project was facilitated by an artist and could take no longer that 30 minutes.

Title: Are you in a room? Within a 2030 minute time period, the classroom will participate artist-directed group performance/happening called“Are you in a room” that will highlight and disrupt the physical space of the classroom. The classroom is space that is often taken for granted and used in conventional ways. Through simple “exercises” such as, cardboard hat making to group perimeter checks, the class will explore new understandings of space and place. These exercises will happen quickly and are designed to be open and subject to spontaneous elements. The performance is an exploration on what makes a “classroom” a classroom and what transforms it? Thus, walking away with a heightened sensibility to the spatial dimensions of their everyday environments and bodily presence within those spaces. Asking oneself am I what makes this a classroom? LOCAL COMMUNITY PROJECTS
Snack & Chat
Snack & Chat is a
collaborative of local grocers and art students. To fight the stigmas of both
“expired goods” and “starving artists” we are collecting the wasted out goods,
that are still edible, from a local grocery store to supply students with a
free meal in exchange for social interaction and communication. This project
aids the grocer in less waste or trash created while supporting their
neighboring artist community. Students
and faculty will gather, select a bag that contains both food and a
conversation starter card, find a partner or group, and engage in sharing food
and thoughts.

Karaoke Taxi is a
public service formatted to encourage alternative methods of exchange. Instead
of taking collecting monetary payment for transportation, this taxi encourages
vocal performances from its commuters. The participants are encouraged to break
the autonomous mold of transportation and step into a collective experience. Project created by Jacquelyn Wagner

In Preparation for final Project: ART FOR ADAMSVILLE will be a project created by Abigal Weaver, an artist local to South Eastern Ohio. Each class of Adamsville Elementary school will work collaboratively to create one piece of art work that will be sold at auction. All proceeds from the auction will be donated back to Adamsville Elementary for their efforts to bring together local residents, artists, and businesses in appreciation of the arts. Project Aware gives everyone an opportunity to bring awareness to an issue or announcement that is meaningful to them. Everyone is welcomed to create a collage piece on neon paper (donated by the CCAD Social Practice Fund) about an awareness. Each poster would be then photographed and digitally edited with a black and white unified boarder and megaphone sticker. The posters will then be available on google through blogger for anyone to print out. Project created by Amanda Cook

individuals in the community to explore and contemplate on some of their
favorite characteristics within themselves, stimulating positive thought
processes I practice we wish to facilitate with this project. The
Woven Self Project gives people the

The purpose of
this project is to teach the art form of Batik. It is a lost
art form, and teaching younger generations can keep future generations
from losing this beautiful form of art. The end of the project will conclude a
piece of work that students can view photos of the end product. Students from
all majors are welcome, but will keep the workshop to a small group so the
process can be learned quickly. I hope that students will contact me to learn
more about batiking, and hopefully use the process in future projects here at
CCAD. Project Created by James LaFollette
